26.11. 709 crackdown (2015, 中國709維權律師大抓捕事件)

Hundreds of human rights activists put into jail in quick succession. Short forms:

709大抓捕
710律师劫

709 refers to the date when the arrests started: 09 July 2015. There were about 200 arrests.

It is impossible to have Rule of law (法治) when the lawyers for certain causes always go to jail.

Figure 282. Wu Gan (吴淦) is a human rights activist detained in 2015 around the 709 crackdown, and sentenced in 2017 for 8 years for Inciting subversion of state power (煽动颠覆国家政权罪). In this image from 2013 he is stating a protest on the streets. By complete "accident", he had spinal injury while he was detained before trial.
